Can i bring begonias in for the winter

Begonia hanging baskets overwintering tips include keeping containers away from drying air from heating vents and fitting shower caps around the baskets to catch excess water that drains from the bottom.

Some types of begonias grow from rhizomes, which are modified stems that creep horizontally just above or just below the soil surface. Unlike other types of begonias that are grown for their flowers, most rhizomatous begonias are cultivated for their foliage, which has vibrant colors and artistic patterns. Rex begonia Begonia rex-cultorum, USDA zones 10 and 11 is one of the most popular rhizomatous begonias. Begonia winter care for rex and other rhizomatous types requires a bit more attention than for other types of begonias.

Rex begonias need a high level of humidity — 50 percent or more — but not too much water and no fertilizer during winter. Grow plants in shallow pots and provide lots of light without direct sun, which can burn the foliage.

Where should I place them, watering etc…. This information was very helpful. I purchased this arrangement at a garden shop in early summer here in the Rochester New York area and it was such an enjoyable thing to display on my patio table! Another question is, will the begonias outside come back up in the spring? Thank you so much. This advice is wonderful thank you. I have the most gorgeous orange begonia that I would hate to lose to frost so I am bringing it indoors.

Thank you! Her begonia and I aren't getting along! The info you shared is just what I needed!! Sincerely, Ms. Micheal Hodge WA State. I live in Texas and I trimmed down and mulched my bedded wax begonias.

My potted begonia also wax I brought inside. And have been keeping it up. Yesterday I noticed mold on the soil top. Thank you so much for the information! I have 2 Begonia plants that have thus survived the winter inside. However, they are getting quite leggy or stringy.

I was afraid to cut them back. I hope there is enough sun for it in the house, facing East, by deck doors, and a few small windows. Any suggestions? Mary in Andover PS We love having our tomato plant, herbs and lettuce in our self irrigating deck planters!

Give your begonia plenty of bright, indirect light indoors through the winter. If it starts to get leggy, then add a grow light.

Are you supposed to remove the blooms before storing for the winter in the garage? So the tubers can store more energy for spring start up?

Thank you, I have had mine for years and this year it went crazy with blooms!!! I think it had more flowers than leaves!!! Awesome that your begonia was such a prolific bloomer this year, how wonderful! As the tubers go dormant, they will naturally drop all of the stems, leaves, and flowers. I have large containers of Whopper begonias that I would like to overwinter.

At this point in the season, they still have blooms but have started losing leaves and are looking a bit leggy. Should I cut them back before bringing them in and, if so, how much? Thank you for a great post! I live in Zone 7 in NC and am planning to overwinter my potted begonias. The foilage is already looking tired, do I need to wait for it to die completely before removing it?

If your begonia is a tuberous type, then it will eventually go dormant and die back completely. You can store the tuber over winter right in the pot, or dig it up and store it in a box — whatever is most convenient for you. We have a microclimate that is warmer than surrounding areas, but we have freezing nighttime temps in the winter, and have snow a few times a year. I plant new tubers about an inch deep.

One four year-old tuber has grown to a diameter of six inches. The pots remain under mature Douglas firs all winter, so they are moist, but not wet. The fallen needles are a great way to acidify the soil.

How might I propagate a couple of my tuberous begonias. Last year the voles ate a lot of my tubers,. This year I only had a few left and I planted them into pots and counter sunk them into the ground. I think they will be ok. Can I propagate them now August 9 in lower Michigan or is it too late?

Can I store the pots in the garage over winter? It is heated in winter to about 50 degrees. I store my fig tree and geraniums in the garage over winter and that works great! Thank you! I hope I can still propagate two of my really pretty tuberous begonias. Unfortunately it is too late to propagate them, the best time would be either spring or early summer.

My begonias are in a big planter outside. Do I let the foliage fall off and then repot to a smaller pot and bring them in? They are only hardy in zones 10 or above. Hi, thanks so much for this great article! It gets to maybe the 20s in there, maybe occasionally lower. How fun, I love buying new plants!! I would not recommend overwintering your tuberous begonias in your garage if it gets that cold. You never want to allow begonias to get below freezing. If the tubers freeze, it will kill them.

Is this just for tuberous begonias? I have a Rex begonia and a beautiful big leaf begonia that I would like to try to overwinter. Thank you for your help. The instructions in this post are just for keeping tuberous begonias, yes.
