This dress has a lot going on, and again, is very '80s. There's nothing particularly offensive about this dress, but there's nothing particularly nice about it, either. The color is nice, I guess? When you picture a stereotypical bridesmaid dress, it probably looks a lot like this. For such a bland dress, there's A LOT happening. The collar!
The sparkles! The tie at the waist! It's basically a Franken-dress. I feel like there's a world where this dress is not terrible — if it were a bit shorter, with a different waistline, maybe — but we do not live in that world.
This is a lovely color, but the style is such a painfully '00s look that it's hard to think fondly of it. The bolero! We were subjected to so many boleros! Another bizarrely '80s outfit, but weirdly flattering? I don't hate it, and I can't quite say why. The color is great on Jane. The top half of the dress isn't bad. The bottom half is a little bad. The accessories are a lot bad. Content that may disturb children Under 8 In one scene, a photo is shown of Tess holding what appears to be a dead cat.
Over 8 Children over eight are unlikely to be disturbed by anything in this film. Alcohol, drugs and other substances Several scenes depict people drinking alcohol. Nudity and sexual activity Jane and Kevin begin kissing passionately in the car. While there are no graphic details, the audience is lead to understand that they have sex. Jane is shown in several scenes early in the film changing clothes in the back of a taxi, revealing bare legs and back, but nudity is implied, rather than explicit.
Several people smoke cigarettes in bar scenes. Be aware that while we do our best to avoid spoilers it is impossible to disguise all details and some may reveal crucial plot elements. What year were the weddings Jane was in? Why does this look like it belongs on Meryl Streep in Heartburn? There is way too much going on here — navy blue lace overlay, poufy skirt, some odd mix of girly lace and rustic chic — and all of it is hideous.
The dress is frumpy to boot. This whole film works hard to make movie star Katherine Heigl into a plain Jane, but this dress is by far the dowdiest thing she wears.
Frankly, my dear, this dress is an antebellum nightmare — the sickly yellow color, the flounces, the oversized orange roses, the bonnet — all of it has me wishing for a tomorrow without this dress after all, it is another day. Plus, she does look kind of cute in the hat and the turquoise scarf. I imagine this dress would be very in vogue for one of two scenarios — being a s bridesmaid, or as nuptial attire for a lesser-known Viscountess at a Royal Wedding. Plus, that lace bodice is pretty — just not on this dress.
I love this bucking of gender norms, but Jane needed some better tailoring on this one.
